“A great passion, a duty toward the land, a commitment to preserve and to innovate that gives rise to great wines.”
Poderi Fogliati is about tradition and passion. Tradition stems from a legacy of grape growing on the 7-hectare plot dating back over 2 centuries when it was first farmed by the historic producer Spirito Zocca. In the modern age, the land was purchased in the 1950s by Guido Fogliati but the winemaking ceased following his death, and the grapes were sold to high profile wineries in the region. Passion was reborn in 2016, when Annalisa and Guido took over the estate and brought it back to life through a sophisticated renovation of the winery and a conversion to the organic cultivation of their vineyards. The estate overlooks the spectacular rolling hills of the Langhe, on a gentle hill in the tiny Barolo Cru named Pugnane – situated between the villages of Castiglione Falletto, Monforte and Barolo. The soils are comprised of Sant'Agata fossils, a marl rich in clay, sand and charcoal. All farming is done organically with the utmost respect for their vineyards to obtain some of the finest grapes in the region. The focus is on biodiversity in the vineyard promoting natural flora and fauna to foster a vibrant and organic soil. Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto are all planted but the prized 2-hectare plot of 80 year + Nebbiolo is the pride of the estate.Typically harvest takes place by hand in early October and following a strict triage the grapes are gently pressed. Winemaking follows a very traditional methodology. Vinification starts in stainless steel vats and only larger format barrels are used. All wines go thru a long maceration and fermentation period ranging between 45 and 55 days depending on the vintage. This was quite the discovery for us as we love traditional styles of Piedmontese wines. Traditional, low-intervention winemaking and an extreme attention to detail, allowed Annalisa + Guido to craft delicious Dolcetto, Nebbiolos and Barolos of gorgeous elegance and unique character. While we currently offer the estate Barolo and Dolcetto we hope to acquire a small parcel of their famed Barolo Bussia in the coming months!
